Receiving the Gift of Life 35

Dearest Pam,

One of the things I love about you is your balanced perspective; you are generally not given to wild swings. You don’t hold on to things, or even beliefs, too firmly, but neither do you abandon them to chase new things lightly.

This brings me to the subject at hand. It is Christmas; that wonderful time of the year for giving and receiving gifts to commemorate the ultimate gift, which is the cause for the holiday.

Each of us is given a gift of life. We have all seen and your doctors have told us of the desperation with which most people cling to life. They think that they must have it and will do or try nearly anything to hold on to it.

I love that you hold your gift of life in open hands. Note the active verb- you hold it. It’s not that you don’t cherish the gift, you lovingly, with care, hold it. It hasn’t been sat aside on a shelf somewhere. It isn’t in a corner gathering dust, it’s firmly in your hands.

But you don’t grasp it. Your grip is not strangling life, it is gently supporting it, which shows your love for the gift, but even more your love for the giver of the gift.

Regardless of the days that remain, I pray that you will continue to live this out. I find it a beautiful reflection of the person God created you to be and I believe it is how you have glorified him in death. Death has no hold on you, only your loving father does.

I love you babe, with all of my heart, I love you and I thank you for helping fashion this beautiful life we have enjoyed together.

Brad
